Jack and Anne, as stewards of the sacred land known as "Great Bear," graciously offer this charming space as a retreat venue, Vrbo, and Airbnb rental. Jack's childhood longing has been to live in the mountains and Anne's childhood longing has been to create a safe space so that people can re-member. We have done just that! We are so grateful to be living our dream.
The Blue Ridge Mountains are a perfect backdrop for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of life. This serene environment is perfect for family vacations, friend getaways, corporate and transformational retreats. The mountain air will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. If your looking for a peaceful and beautiful place to start, then Great Bear is the perfect choice.
Venue space- Includes "Main" cabin and "Little Bear" cabin
Here at Great Bear we offer a small-scale private retreat space for your unique gatherings. As the stewards, we want to support your vision: we prepare meals, tend campfires, offer guided nature walks, and lend a hand when needed.
Currently between both cabins we have eight twin size temper-pedic beds or four king size beds shared between 3 large bedrooms and three full baths. We can be creative and offer a few more beds "glamping" style. The main cabin hosts two bedrooms each having two twin or one king bed and two bathrooms, also a serene covered balcony deck for morning coffee and uncovered deck for evening dining and star gazing. There are several gathering spaces: the fire pit, the great room in the main cabin, the lawn, and up on "Jack's Hill". A second cabin on the property known as "Little Bear" does not disappoint! She offers a larger bedroom with four twin beds or two kings with one full bathroom, a cozy relaxing atmosphere with a stunning view of Doe Mountain, an 8600 acre recreational area of protected mountain terrain and trails.
Jack and I feel good about who we are and what we offer, so we feel confident in saying this land has mystical qualities and is overflowing with good vibes. We take this "stewardship" seriously, we are hands on, involved in every detail of your stay at Great Bear. Our offering is unique in that we can truly customize your stay with us. Watauga Lake Winery
Experience the taste of our unique mountain wines produced from the fruit grown in the "Appalachian High Country American Viticulture Area". Tour the winery located in the historic Johnson County Big Dry Run Schoolhouse and you may even meet the "ghosts of school year's past". The wall of remembrance will take you back in time and has a very special story to tell.

The Johnson County Center for the Arts is a really nice gallery that showcases over 30 artisans from the Appalachian Mountains. This is your destination for locally made art and crafts where you can find that certain piece of art that you have been looking for.The popular Johnson County's Heritage Music Trail, Long Journey Home, is based in this creative art center. They also have an outside covered porch stage to showcase the many talented local musicians in our area. Be sure to plan a visit to this exceptional art center.
